How to Read Your Plant's Symptoms
First, note whether the problem appears on new growth or old growth. Nutrients that are mobile within the plant (nitrogen, potassium, magnesium) are moved from old leaves to new growth when deficient. Therefore, deficiencies in mobile nutrients show up first on older leaves. Immobile nutrients (iron, calcium) cannot be moved, so their deficiencies show up first on new, growing leaves.
1. Nitrogen (N) Deficiency
Symptoms: Poor growth of the new leaves, and the lower (older) leaves show a yellowish or whitish color.
Cause: Very low nitrates (0-5 ppm). Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for plant growth.
Solution: Increase your nitrate levels to 10-20 ppm by increasing your fish load, feeding more, or (most effectively) dosing a nitrogen‑specific fertilizer like Seachem Nitrogen or Easy Green.
2. Potassium (K) Deficiency
Symptoms: Tiny, dark spots that sometimes turn into small pinholes, primarily on older leaves.
Cause: Potassium is highly mobile and often the first element to be depleted in a planted tank.
Solution: Dose a potassium‑specific fertilizer (e.g., Seachem Potassium) or increase your comprehensive fertilizer dose. Aim for 5-20 ppm of potassium.
3. Iron (Fe) Deficiency
Symptoms: New shoots grow looking yellowish and dull, but the leaf veins remain green for a short time. In severe cases, new leaves are almost white.
Cause: Low iron levels or the iron is not chelated, making it unavailable to plants, especially at higher pH levels (>7.0).
Solution: Dose a chelated iron supplement (e.g., Seachem Iron, Iron Chelate 10%) and ensure your comprehensive fertilizer includes iron. Treat iron deficiency immediately, as plants cannot recover from severe iron chlorosis.
4. Magnesium (Mg) Deficiency
Symptoms: New shoots grow dull and pale with dark green leaf veins (interveinal chlorosis), but the veins themselves stay green. This is often mistaken for iron deficiency. However, magnesium affects older leaves first, while iron affects new growth.
Cause: Softened water or the use of RODI water without remineralization.
Solution: Add a GH remineralizer that contains magnesium, or dose a magnesium‑specific supplement like Seachem Equilibrium. Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) can also be used at 1 tsp per 20 gallons.
5. Phosphate (P) Deficiency
Symptoms: Stunted growth, fading colors or darkening colors of new leaves, and sometimes dark algae spots appear on the leaves. Phosphate deficiency is rare in a well‑stocked community tank because fish food is rich in phosphate.
Cause: Overuse of phosphate‑removing media in a planted tank, or extremely high light levels driving rapid growth without enough phosphate.
Solution: Aim for a phosphate level of 0.5-2.0 mg/L. Increase phosphate by feeding more, or using a phosphate‑specific additive like Seachem Phosphorus.
Treatment Protocol
Do not add a dozen different products at once. If you suspect a deficiency, start with the most common one: potassium or nitrogen. Dose a small amount for 1-2 weeks and observe. Then address the next suspect. Keep a log of what you add and when. It may take several weeks for new, healthy leaves to grow and show you that the problem has been solved.
