Failure Mode & Hazard Mitigation Analysis
Uncalibrated Sensor DriftHIGH
Re-calibrate digital probes and cross-check liquid reagent expiration dates every 6 months.
Rapid Parameter ShockHIGH
Never adjust parameters (temperature, pH, salinity) faster than natural biological adaptation thresholds.
Gross vs. Net Volume ErrorMODERATE
Always deduct displacement of internal hardscape and substrate before calculating chemical or volume metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the inside or outside dimensions of my terrarium?
Use the internal floor dimensions because the calculator estimates the space actually occupied by substrate.
What if my substrate is deeper at the back than the front?
Use an average substrate depth for a simple volume estimate. If the depth changes substantially across the enclosure, divide the floor into sections and calculate each section separately for a more representative estimate.
Does this tell me how many bags of substrate to buy?
It gives you the volume of substrate space, not a guaranteed bag count. Bag sizes vary, and loose substrates can compact or settle after mixing and installation. Compare the calculated volume with the usable volume stated by the substrate supplier.
Does this calculator account for drainage layers?
No. Enter the depth of the substrate layer you intend to place above any drainage or structural layers. If you need to calculate several layers independently, calculate each layer's volume separately.
Can I use this for a bioactive terrarium?
Yes. The calculator estimates the volume of the substrate layer. A bioactive build may also include drainage, separation, leaf litter, hardscape, and other components that affect the final amount of loose material required.
