Species Overview

Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides) is a fast-growing, highly adaptable fern that thrives in most freshwater aquariums. With its bright green, finely lobed leaves, it creates a lush background display while rapidly absorbing excess nutrients, helping to outcompete nuisance algae.

Care & Placement Guidelines

Water Sprite is unique in its growth habit: it can be planted into the substrate as a background plant or left to float freely at the surface. When floating, its dense roots provide excellent cover for fry and labyrinth fish. It does not require CO2 injection, though moderate to high lighting will encourage denser, bushier growth. To propagate, simply trim healthy side shoots or adventitious plantlets that grow on mature leaves and replant them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Water Sprite grow floating?

Yes. Water Sprite grows exceptionally well when floating. Its long, trailing roots provide excellent shade and hiding spots for young fish.

Why is my Water Sprite turning brown and melting?

Melting can occur during acclimation to a new tank, or if the plant is buried too deeply in the substrate. Ensure only the roots are planted, leaving the crown exposed, and provide adequate water column nutrients.
