Formula & Calculation Logic

First, tank volume is converted to liters. The required TAN increase is calculated as Target TAN − Current TAN in mg/L, since 1 ppm TAN is approximately 1 mg/L as nitrogen. For the simplified density assumption of approximately 1.00 g/mL, the estimated ammonia-solution dose is Dose (mL) = [Volume (L) × (Target TAN ppm − Current TAN ppm)] / [10 × Ammonia Concentration %]. If the current TAN is already at or above the target, the required additional dose is 0 mL. Commercial products may differ in concentration basis and density, so product-label instructions should take precedence when applicable.

WARNING: FOR FISHLESS CYCLING ONLY.

Do not dose ammonia with fish or other aquatic animals in the tank. This calculator estimates an ammonia-solution dose for a fishless cycle. It does not determine ammonia toxicity or whether an aquarium is safe for livestock.

What This Calculator Does

This calculator estimates how much ammonia solution may be needed to raise Total Ammonia Nitrogen (TAN) from your current reading to a selected target during a fishless aquarium cycle. The calculation uses aquarium volume, current TAN, target TAN, and the stated ammonia-solution concentration.

Fishless cycling methods vary. A target such as 2.0 ppm TAN is used by some cycling protocols, but it should not be treated as a universal requirement for every aquarium or cycling product. Follow the instructions for the specific cycling method and product you are using when those instructions differ.

Dosing vs. Toxicity: Know the Difference

This Ammonia Dosing Calculator answers a dosing question: how much ammonia solution is needed to raise TAN to a selected target in a fishless aquarium.

If you are trying to determine whether ammonia already present in an aquarium is potentially toxic to fish, use the Ammonia Toxicity Calculator instead. The toxicity calculator estimates the Free Ammonia (NH3) fraction from TAN, pH, and temperature. These are different calculations with different purposes.

Understanding the Calculation

The required dose depends on the amount of water, the increase in TAN required, and the concentration of the ammonia solution. For the simplified calculation used here, solution density is assumed to be approximately 1.00 g/mL. Because real ammonia solutions can have different densities and concentration-label conventions, the calculated mL value should be treated as an estimate rather than a universally exact product dose.

Dose (mL) = [Tank Volume (L) × (Target TAN ppm − Current TAN ppm)] / [10 × Ammonia Concentration %]

The calculation treats 1 ppm TAN as approximately 1 mg/L as nitrogen. For US aquarium gallons, the conversion used is 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters.

If your current TAN is equal to or greater than your selected target, the calculated additional dose is 0 mL. Do not add more ammonia simply to reach a preset number when your measured TAN is already at or above the target.

Concentration and Product Differences

The concentration field is intended for a solution whose ammonia concentration is known and can be meaningfully expressed on the basis used by the product or source. Concentration alone does not fully describe every commercial solution because density and labeling conventions can differ.

Do not use this generic calculator to reverse-engineer proprietary ammonium-chloride products from their drop dosage. If a cycling product provides its own dosing instructions, follow the manufacturer's instructions instead.

Why the Calculator Uses Milliliters

The primary output is milliliters because a measured volume can be reproduced more consistently than a drop count. Drop volume varies with the bottle, nozzle, liquid properties, and dispensing technique, so this calculator does not convert the result into drops.

Example

A 10 US gallon aquarium contains approximately 37.85 liters. If the current TAN is 0 ppm, the target is 2.0 ppm, and the stated ammonia solution concentration is 10%, the simplified 1.00 g/mL model estimates approximately 0.76 mL of solution.

This example demonstrates the mathematics only. Always verify the concentration basis and dosing instructions for the actual product being used before adding anything to an aquarium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What TAN target should I use for a fishless cycle?

There is no single universal target that applies to every fishless-cycling method. Some established aquarium protocols use a target around 2.0 ppm TAN, while other methods use different dosing schedules or concentrations. Treat the 2.0 ppm default as a practical example rather than a universal requirement, and follow the instructions for your chosen cycling method or product.

Can I calculate the dose in drops?

No. This calculator intentionally reports milliliters rather than drops because drop volume varies between bottles, nozzles, liquids, and dispensing techniques. Use an appropriate graduated syringe or other accurate measuring device when a small liquid volume must be measured.

Why does the calculator ask for my current TAN?

The current TAN reading determines how much additional ammonia would be needed to reach the selected target. If your current TAN is already at or above the target, the calculator returns 0 mL rather than recommending another ammonia addition.

Can I use this calculator with ammonium chloride products?

Only when the product concentration is expressed in a way that matches the calculator's concentration model. Many aquarium ammonium-chloride products provide their own dosing instructions rather than a directly comparable ammonia-solution concentration. If the manufacturer provides dosing instructions, use those instructions rather than reverse-engineering the product with this calculator.

Can I use this calculator with household ammonia?

Only if the product's composition and concentration are clearly known and appropriate for aquarium use. Do not use household cleaning products containing surfactants, fragrances, dyes, or other additives in an aquarium. A concentration label alone is not enough to establish that a cleaning product is aquarium-safe.

Why does the calculator assume a solution density?

The desired ammonia mass can be calculated from TAN concentration and water volume, but converting that mass into milliliters also requires the density of the ammonia solution. When no product-specific density is supplied, this calculator uses an approximately 1.00 g/mL assumption and labels the result as an estimate.

What happens if my current TAN is already above the target?

The calculator returns 0 mL because no additional ammonia is required to reach a target that is already met or exceeded. Do not add ammonia simply because a cycling schedule previously specified a target dose; retest and follow the protocol you are using.

Can I use this calculator with fish in the aquarium?

No. This calculator is specifically for fishless cycling. Do not intentionally dose ammonia into an aquarium containing fish, shrimp, snails, or other aquatic animals.
