Solutions: Reduce photoperiod to 6 hours, add fast-growing plants (hornwort, water sprite) to outcompete algae, manually remove with a toothbrush (twist to wind up strands). Introduce algae-eaters: Amano shrimp, American flagfish, Florida flagfish, or Siamese algae eaters. Check phosphate levels (should be <0.5 ppm) — use phosphate-removing media if high.
Brown Diatom Algae
Appearance: Powdery brown coating on glass, substrate, and decorations. Common in new tanks (first 2-3 months).
Causes: Low light levels, high silicates, and immature biological filtration.
Solutions: Increase light intensity gradually. Diatoms disappear naturally as the tank matures. Speed up removal with Nerite snails, Otocinclus catfish, or bristlenose plecos. Use reverse osmosis (RO) water to reduce silicates if tap water is high.
Black Beard Algae (BBA) / Red Algae
Appearance: Dark gray, black, or reddish tufts (like a brush) on slow-growing plant leaves (Anubias, Java fern), driftwood, and filter outlets.
Causes: CO2 instability, fluctuating pH, or low CO2 in planted tanks. Also high organic waste.
Solutions: The most reliable treatment: spot-dose with hydrogen peroxide (3%) using a syringe — turn off filters, apply directly to BBA, wait 5 minutes, restart flow. Dose 1.5 ml per gallon (max 15 ml for 10 gallons). Alternative: Seachem Excel (liquid carbon) spot treatment. Introduce true Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus oblongus) — not the false SAE or flying fox. Improve CO2 stability — if using injected CO2, ensure consistent daytime levels. BBA rarely disappears completely but can be controlled.
Green Spot Algae (GSA)
Appearance: Small, hard, bright green circular spots on slow-growing plant leaves and glass.
Causes: Low phosphate levels (<0.1 ppm) combined with high light.
Solutions: Increase phosphates to 0.5-1.0 ppm using phosphate fertilizers. Add more fast-growing plants. Nerite snails are excellent at scraping GSA off glass. Hard spots on glass require a razor blade scraper.
Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)
Appearance: Slimy, dark blue-green or black mat with a distinct earthy or musty smell. Not true algae but photosynthetic bacteria.
Causes: Low nitrates (<5 ppm), stagnant water flow, and accumulated organic debris.
Solutions: Physically remove as much as possible (siphon out). Increase water flow with a powerhead. A three-day blackout (cover tank, no light) kills cyanobacteria without harming fish. Chemical treatment: Erythromycin phosphate (antibiotic) works but may harm biological filter — use as last resort. Raise nitrates to 10-20 ppm with nitrate fertilizer. Cyanobacteria indicates low nitrogen — address this root cause.
Green Water (Algae Bloom)
Appearance: Water looks like pea soup — suspended single-celled algae.
Causes: High light and excess ammonia or nitrates. Often triggered by overfeeding or dying plants.
Solutions: Turn off lights for 3-5 days. Add a UV sterilizer (most effective permanent solution). Increase mechanical filtration with diatomaceous earth filter or fine filter floss changed daily. Reduce feeding by 50% for a week.
